Calcium, iron, zinc, and antioxidants in sesame. Why daily sesame spreads make sense.

Daily Health Benefits of Sesame: What Science Says

Sesame is one of the world's oldest edible seeds — and fortunately, it tastes wonderful too.

Sesame cultivation has a history of thousands of years, and ancient texts describe it as a seed of energy. Today nutrition science confirms that reputation was not unfounded: these tiny seeds are among the richest plant sources of calcium, iron, and zinc, and their fat profile is mostly unsaturated and heart-friendly.

Nutrition in one tablespoon

  • Calcium for bones
  • Iron for energy
  • Unsaturated fats for the heart
  • Zinc for the immune system
  • Fiber for digestion

What is interesting about sesame are compounds unique to it called sesamin and sesamol — antioxidants found only in this seed, and numerous studies have examined their role in fighting inflammation and oxidative stress. Roasting and grinding sesame in tahini and sesame cream production also makes these nutrients easier for the body to absorb; so one tablespoon of sesame cream is more efficient nutritionally than the same amount of whole sesame seeds.

The good news is that daily sesame use does not require a major diet overhaul: one tablespoon of sesame cream on morning toast, a little tahini in lunch salad dressing, or a tahini-and-syrup afternoon snack is enough to bring these nutrients into your diet regularly. Consistency matters more than quantity — a little, every day.
